I am thinking of ordering multiple ipod touches for my classroom. I have heard some great things about activities that students can do on them independently. I am a little bit concerned about the level of training my students will need to use them effectively. Any ideas? Experiences?
I am also somewhat concerned about how to make rules and procedures about their use. Any suggestions?

If I use the I-Touches for academic reinforcement, I make sure a practicum student, teacher, or assistant is nearby, unless it is an app that gives you a % accuracy. If the student switches between apps or plays /clicks instead of thinking before answering, they lose the privilege for the day. I allow students to do whatever apps I have downloaded if it is their free time. I find it helpful to start by downloading free apps and if I use them, then pay for the entire app. Jennifer Wright
ReplyDeleteI'm not as familiar with the touch iPods as I only have the classic iPods in my room, but since I work with a larger class I use the document camera to introduce how to use it and explain how to use the picture menu card that I've made. My students can't read so I use the settings to limit what options are available on the main menu and I made a picture card so students know what those options are. Since I generally use mine for a literacy station I only download reading videos and songs on mine so that way they are only accessing appropriate things.
ReplyDeleteI think you will be amazed at how intuitive your students will be with technology. When my personal iPod arrived at home, I played with it and left it out on the kitchen table that night. In the morning I found my 4 year old playing with one of the Doodle apps...she had figured it out on her own. I like the idea of using the document cam to show how to navigate. T-TAC has an amazing list of Educational Apps (free) which you might find useful as a reference when adding extension activities.
ReplyDeleteI hope you all are correct because the Ipods are in and I want to use them effectively. I am going to start researching free apps now, so any comments of great apps or ones to stay away from would be great!
